How to Care for Wound Dressings at Home

While patients are in the hospital, nurses and doctors care for their wound dressings. After being released from the hospital, patients need to care for their own wound dressings at home. Without proper care, the wound might not heal correctly or, even worse, become infected.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the wound thoroughly with saline water. Normal soap and water can be used; however, the saline solution is more gentle and causes less irritation.

    • 2

Blot the area dry with a towel. If the skin surrounding the wound is not completely dry, the adhesive on the bandages will not hold.

    • 3

Dab a little antiseptic ointment on the wound. The ointment fights against infection and relieves itchiness.

    • 4

Wrap gauze around the wound. The gauze not only controls bleeding but protects the wound from dirt and debris that could cause infection. Secure the gauze with adhesive tape or bandages.

    • 5

Change the dressings daily as directed by a doctor. Always change wound dressings in a clean, sterile environment.
