Foot & Toe Pain
We depend on our feet to get us where we want to go. From walking to dancing, running to tennis, a healthy foot is taken for granted. Foot and toe pain from injury, disease or overuse can interfere with day-to-day life and even cause us to give up favorite activities.-
Main Causes of Foot and Toe Pain
-
Most foot pain can be traced to injury, overuse, or improperly fitted shoes, high heels or pointed-toe shoes, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Hammertoe
-
Hammertoe causes pain where the big toe joins the foot, and causes the second toe to move into a claw-like position that makes it painful to walk. In severe cases, surgery to straighten the joint is required.
Gout
-
According to the Arthritis Foundation, gout often attacks the large joint of the big toe, and can cause mild to moderate pain.
Bunions
-
A bunion is a protrusion of bone or tissue around a joint. Bunions can form at the base of the big or little toe, after the joint has been stressed over time. Arthritis in the big toe joint can also lead to a painful bunion.
Temporary Relief of Foot and Toe Pain
-
For temporary relief of foot and toe pain until medical treatment is sought, apply ice to the affected area to reduce swelling and help calm pain. Keep the painful foot elevated and rest it as much as possible. Prevent irritation from rubbing with foot pads.
