What to Do When Your Toe Nail Falls Off?

Losing a toenail can be painful, even though it is often considered a mild injury. Keeping your injured toe clean and protected can prevent infection and encourage growth of a new toenail. If you suspect infection or a problem with the healing process, contact your doctor for more instructions.
  1. Clean Is Key

    • Although it may look ugly, clean the wound daily with anti-bacterial soap and water. Apply an ointment such as Neosporin after cleansing and drying the wound. Neosporin is a trade name of an antibiotic that is applied topically to speed the healing process and prevent infection.

    Cover the Area

    • After cleansing the wound and applying anti-bacterial ointment, cover the area with a bandage. Make sure that the sticky part of the bandage does not touch the wound, as it may irritate the area when you pull it off. If the skin where the toenail is missing is very tender, cut gauze to fit and wrap around your toe. This will provide extra support. Wear socks and comfortable shoes during the healing process for maximum comfort.

    Monitor Healing

    • Although a new toenail should grow in place, this may take a few weeks. Because the process is slow, monitoring your healing is essential. If the pain increases or you think the wound is not healing, see your doctor.
