Hemmoroids Treatment

Hemorrhoids are swollen or inflamed veins surrounding the lower rectum. These swollen veins can cause mild discomfort or intense pain. There are many treatments that can provide short-term or long-term relief.
  1. Treatments For Immediate Relief

    • For immediate relief, a patient should soak in a warm, plain bath several times a day for 10 minutes at a time. Topical hemorrhoid cream should also be applied as directed on the medication's label. Doctors also recommend that patients add more fiber to their diet and avoid consuming alcohol, so that they do not further disturb the hemorrhoids.

    Rubber Band Ligation

    • In more serious cases, it is necessary to seek other treatment. In rubber band ligation, a doctor ties a rubber band to the base of the hemorrhoid, cutting off the blood flow. In a week's time, the hemorrhoid shrivels up and falls off. A scar forms in its place.

    Sclerotherapy

    • Usually a treatment reserved for the removal of varicose veins, sclerotherapy can be used to treat hemorrhoids. A doctor injects a salt solution into the inflamed vein, causing the lining of the vessel to swell. The swelling leads to the blood clotting, and the clotting eventually causes the hemorrhoid to turn into a scar.

    Infrared Coagulation

    • Infrared coagulation, the most widely used hemorrhoid treatment, uses a burst of infrared light on the tissue above the hemorrhoid. This causes the veins to coagulate, recede and shrink. The procedure is quick, easy and virtually painless.

    Hemorrhoidectomy

    • In the most severe of cases, a hemorrhoidectomy is performed to remove hemorrhoids. A doctor cuts the hemorrhoid open and removes the clotted blood vessel. The recovery time from this procedure is longer than for any other, which is why it is only used for stubborn hemorrhoids.
