Toenail Infection Treatment
Toenail infections are caused by different types of fungi that grow underneath the nail and nail bed. This can lead to nail discoloration, itching and pain. Because the fungus can spread from toenail to toenail quickly, seeking treatment as soon as possible is advised. If left untreated, nails can become brittle and eventually fall off. It can take up to 12 months for nails to regrow. In the meantime, it may be difficult to wear certain shoes, participate in sports or get through the day without feeling pain and discomfort. Toenail infection medications and at-home remedies are available.-
Causes of Toenail Infections
-
A toenail infection, also known as onychomycosis, is most commonly caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes. This fungi grows in damp areas. Showers, pools, exercise rooms and other areas shared by the public may become a breeding ground for dermatophytes. Wearing tight-fitting shoes for long periods of time and poor foot hygiene can also cause toenail infections.
Symptoms
-
Symptoms of a toenail infection include yellowing or blackening of the nail, brittle or cracked nails, itchiness or pain around the nail bed, and thick, flaky buildup around the cuticle or on the nail itself. If left untreated, toenail infections can spread to other toenails.
Treatment
-
There are several homeopathic (natural) treatments, over-the-counter medications and prescription drugs used to treat toenail infections. Homepathic treatments include soaking your feet in warm water mixed with cider vinegar for at least 15 minutes each day. Afterwards, dry feet and toes completely using a clean, soft towel. Apply tea tree oil to the entire nail and nail bed every day until the color and texture of the nail improves. Topical medications may be applied to the nail and nail bed to help kill the fungus. These medications can be found in most drug stores. There are also prescription medications to treat nail fungus, but there is the risk of side-effects, so be sure to discuss this option with your doctor. Cleaning feet and nails daily and wearing clean, dry socks can help prevent future infections. Trimming nails using a nail clipper is also advised.
