Home Remedy for a Swollen Lip

Lips sometimes swell because of an injury, sometimes because of an allergic reaction. No matter the reason, a fat lip is unsightly, and many seek to relieve the swelling as soon as possible. Finding a helpful home remedy can reduce your discomfort quickly.
  1. Ice

    • Ice can help reduce the pain and swelling of a swollen lip. Wrap a couple of ice cubes in a clean towel and apply to the lips for 10 minutes hourly.

    Heat

    • Warm compresses can help alleviate a swollen lip by slowing the circulation of the blood through the injured area. A heating pad or washcloth submerged in warm water can be applied for 10-15 minutes hourly. Alternating heat and cold is also very effective.

    Aloe Vera

    • Aloe vera gel has several anti-inflammatory agents that can help reduce swelling. This is especially true if the lip is swollen because of an allergic reaction or irritation. Apply pure gel from the plant for best results.

    Tea Bags

    • Steeped tea bags are an effective remedy. Remove the bag from hot water and allow to cool until it can be comfortably placed on your lips without pain or burning. Leave the bag on the lips for 10 minutes. Repeat this process three to four times a day.

    Wax

    • Metal braces can easily aggravate lips. Covering the braces in wax will help reduce the irritation. Apply the wax over each bracket as needed to protect your lips.
