How to Prevent Leg Swelling

Leg swelling is the common term for edema or fluid retention. It is a condition marked by fluid accumulation in the legs, and it usually affects both legs equally. Harmless leg swelling does not occur with other symptoms such as pain. If other symptoms occur along with the swelling, it is likely the result of another medical condition such as vascular disease or a blood clot. Causes of leg swelling are numerous and range in severity from harmless to life threatening. A doctor should be consulted to determine the cause. Leg swelling that is caused by trapped fluid can be prevented or eased by simple things you can do at home.

Instructions

Move around frequently and avoid standing in one spot or sitting for long periods of time. Take a break every hour to move around and exercise your legs. This allows some of the fluid to return to the heart from the legs.

    • 2

Elevate your legs when you are relaxing and sleeping. Elevating your legs above the level of your heart allows gravity to move the excess fluid out of your legs.

    • 3

Wear support hose. If you have to be on your feet for extended periods of time, wear support stockings to prevent the fluid from pooling in your legs.

    • 4

Wear comfortable clothing that is not restricting. Too-tight underwear or socks can cause fluid to pool in the legs. Wear loose-fitting garments and comfortable low-heeled shoes.

    • 5

Track the amount of salt in your diet. Too much salt in your diet encourages fluid retention.

    • 6

Exercise regularly. A regular exercise program can help you to lose weight and build stronger muscles in your legs. Being overweight puts stress on the circulatory system and contributes to leg swelling. Stronger leg muscles will help to pump excess fluid in your legs back more efficiently.
