How to Stop Blood Loss After Cancer Treatment

Fighting cancer is hard enough, but often you also have to deal with serious side effects from treatments such as chemotherapy. One of the treatment side effects you may have is a low blood platelet count called Thrombocytopenia. Since these cells help your blood clot, lower counts make you prone to bleeding heavily.

Instructions

  1. Treat Nosebleeds

    • 1

Sit upright. This prevents blood from dripping back down your throat.

    • 2

Tilt your head forward to prevent choking on your blood.

    • 3

Squeeze firmly just below the bridge of your nose, with a clean tissue or cloth if possible.

    • 4

Apply ice above the bridge of your nose to slow down the blood flow. Keep the ice on your nose for 10 minutes.

    Stop Your Wound From Bleeding

    • 5

Put pressure on the wound with gauze or a clean cloth for at least 5 minutes. Leave the cloth in place.

    • 6

Elevate the wound above heart level if bleeding has not stopped in 5 minutes.

    • 7

Try using an ice pack for pressure to slow down blood flow to the wound while elevating it.

    • 8

Sit or lay down if bleeding continues. Continue to apply pressure. If you haven't stopped bleeding in over 10 minutes, call for help.
