How to Treat an Injured Head

Head injuries are common, especially if you have rambunctious children running around the house. Not every bump on the head or open wound requires medical attention at the hospital. In fact, there are injuries that you can treat yourself with a little ice and patience.

Instructions

    • 1

Fall down and bang your head and watch the goose egg appear on your scalp. This swollen spot will be tender to the touch and may bruise. However, if you are acting and seeing normally, there is no need for medical treatment, because the only remedy for such an accident is time.

    • 2

Wash the wound if there is an opening and blood is coming out. The first step will be to clear away the blood and get the majority out of the hair surrounding the wound. It is always a good idea to wash it a second time in order to clean out the wound and avoid infections.

    • 3

Wrap ice in a thin towel and hold this against the wound. Do not use loose ice, as it will become next to impossible to hold this ice once it begins melting. The towel will provide adequate support for holding the ice in once spot for long periods of time.

    • 4

Apply a bag of frozen vegetables to the wound if a towel of ice is not convenient. It is important to apply the cold as soon as possible to prevent serious swelling. The frozen vegetables bag will form nicely to the wound and help keep the swelling down.

    • 5

Repeat this with new ice or new frozen vegetables bags every half an hour for 2 to 4 hours. This is the critical time for treating your head wound; after this point, there is nothing to do.
