  Don't take tattoos lightly: If they get infected, it could become very serious. Ask your tattoo artist how you should care for your tattoo in order to ensure that you have the least chance of getting an infection.

  Indications that an infection has occurred include: swelling, redness, heat or tenderness around the tattoo; red streaks extending from the tattoo area; pus coming from the wound; swollen or tender lymph nodes; or fever.

  Use an antibiotic ointment to heal your infected tattoo. Clear or clear-yellow fluid often drains from an infected tattoo, and it may then change to creamy yellow, brown or red. It may look or smell like pus. Infection may also occur deep inside the wound.

  Treat an infected tattoo by keeping it dry at all times. Water is the biggest enemy of your tattoo when it is healing.

  Create an environment that stimulates rapid wound healing. A wound maintained in a moist environment has a lower infection rate than a wound that is dry.
