What head injuries can kill?
Head injuries that can kill:- Penetrating head injuries: Objects (e.g., bullets) penetrating the skull can cause massive brain damage and are often fatal.
- Diffuse axonal injury (DAI): A form of traumatic brain injury characterized by widespread damage to the brain's white matter. It is a leading cause of death in moderate and severe traumatic brain injuries.
- Cerebral contusions and lacerations: Severe contusions, or bruising of the brain, and lacerations, or tears in the brain tissue, can lead to herniation, a condition in which brain tissue is forced through natural openings in the skull. Herniation often leads to death if not promptly treated.
- Intracranial hematomas: Blood clots within the skull, such as epidural hematomas (between the skull and dura mater), subdural hematomas (between the dura mater and the brain), and intracerebral hematomas (within the brain), can cause significant brain swelling and compression of brain tissue, leading to impaired brain function and potentially death.
- Skull fractures: Fractures that involve the base of the skull, particularly those that extend through the sinuses or into the brain, can cause significant brain damage, cerebrospinal fluid leaks, and other complications that may be life-threatening.
