1
Wash and disinfect your hands thoroughly with water and antibacterial soap. Never forgo this step, as the bacteria on your hands can get into your wound and cause an infection. Cleanse the wound with water and immediately apply an antiseptic, such as hydrogen peroxide once your hands are clean.
-
2
Allow the wound to air dry for a minute or two. Apply a dressing to the wound which is slightly larger than the wound itself. If the wound is deep, insert an Aquacel ribbon directly into the wound up to 80 percent of the way. The ribbon will eventually swell, as it absorbs any excess liquid that may be excreted. Make sure to leave about an inch of ribbon outside of the wound for later removal.
-
3
Place a secondary sterile gauze directly over the Aquacel pad and secure in place, using either surgical tape or a bandage.
-
4
Replace and change the bandage, once the liquid from the wound penetrates through the secondary gauze, or every 2 to 3 days from the initial insertion of the gauze. Once the wound begins to heal, the gauze can be changed (up to) every 7 days, until completely healed.
