How to Walk Using a Cane
A cane can help if you have suffer from instability, or if you have an injury that prevents full mobility in one of your legs. It will help you balance while walking, or help you avoid putting weight on the injured limb. However, you will not reap the full benefits of using a cane, if you do not use the proper method. With repeated use and practice, it will begin to feel more natural.Instructions

Using Cane for Stability

Grip the cane in either hand. Place it one small step ahead of your foot to begin.

Lift the cane, as you simultaneously step forward with the opposite leg.

Lower the cane as the opposite foot simultaneously hits the ground. Place the cane so that it is even with the opposite foot.

Hold the cane in place. Step forward with the leg that is on the same side as the cane. Repeat the entire process.
Using Cane for Injury or Disability

Hold the cane in the hand opposite the affected leg. Place it one small step ahead of your injured leg to begin.

Step forward with the affected leg and simultaneously lift the cane. Lower the cane, as you lower the foot.

Hold the cane in place and step forward with the uninjured leg. Repeat the entire process to continue walking.
Walking Up Steps

Hold onto the railing with the free hand, if possible.

Hold the cane in place with the opposite hand. Step up one level with the uninjured leg.

Step up with the injured leg. Move the cane up in unison with the leg.

Repeat the entire process to continue up the steps.
Traveling Down Steps

Hold onto the railing with your free hand.

Lower the cane onto the next step. Hold the cane in place and lower the injured leg to the step.

Continue to hold the cane in place, as you lower the uninjured leg onto the step.
