Why can you not get stitches to close a wound after certain time?

After a certain amount of time, typically 6 to 8 hours after the injury, the wound edges begin to retract and become ischemic, meaning they have a reduced blood supply and oxygen. This makes it difficult for the tissue to heal and increases the risk of infection. Suturing a wound after this point can actually do more harm than good, as it can further damage the tissue and make it more difficult for the body to heal itself. Additionally, suturing a wound that has already started to heal can lead to scarring and other complications.
