The space between cranial bones of a newborn is called a fontanelle. Fontanelles are soft spots on the head of a newborn baby, where the bones of the skull have not yet fused together. They allow the baby's head to mold and change shape as it passes through the birth canal. There are six fontanelles in total, but the most prominent one is the anterior fontanelle, which is located at the top of the head. The anterior fontanelle usually closes by 18 months of age.
