1
Buy a toothbrush made especially for a baby’s small mouth. Although gauze is useful before a baby’s primary teeth erupt, a brush cleans better once the teeth have poked through the gums. Make sure the bristles are extra-soft. Do not use adult toothbrushes with medium or hard bristles.
-
2
Sit your baby somewhere comfortable. Make sure you can see her teeth.
-
3
Use water and the toothbrush to brush your baby’s teeth. At this age, toothpaste is not necessary. If the baby is resistant to having his teeth brushed, a smear of flavored children’s toothpaste may encourage cooperation. Choose toothpaste that does not contain fluoride. Fluoride toothpaste is not recommended for children younger than age 2.

4
Clean the teeth using a gentle circular motion. Pay attention to the front, back and sides of each tooth. While you are brushing the baby’s teeth, clean his tongue and gums, too.
-
5
Allow your baby to have a drink of water when you have finished brushing.
-
6
Brush the baby’s teeth twice a day: once in the morning and once before bed.
