1
Inform the piercer that you have braces and request Bioplast jewelry. Bioplast jewelry is a type of plastic body piercing jewelry that can be put in an autoclave and sterilized before piercing. This type of jewelry is less likely to break or damage braces than stainless steel, titanium or niobium.

2
Downsize the jewelry two weeks after the initial piercing. When the lip is originally pierced, the jewelry will have to be long to allow for swelling. Once the initial swelling has subsided, the jewelry needs to be changed to a shorter post so it will not rub against or get caught on your braces.

3
Follow the aftercare instructions from the piercer. Do not bite, chew or suck on the jewelry. These actions can cause the jewelry to bounce back onto or rub the braces, resulting in damage or scratches.
