Types of Adult Braces
Braces, or orthodontia appliances, are used to straighten crooked teeth and place them in better alignment in the jaw. Overcrowded or misaligned teeth can lead to tooth decay, periodontal disease, and future loss of teeth. More adults are getting braces to correct these problems so they can keep their teeth longer.-
Traditional Metal
-
Metal braces are the traditional type of braces used for orthodontia. The metal brackets, normally made of stainless steel, are glued to the front of the teeth.
Titanium
-
Titanium braces are just like steel metal braces, but are great for people with allergies to metals.
Clear Ceramic
-
Clear ceramic braces are glued to the front of the teeth. They are less noticeable than metal braces, but do have a tendency to break easily.
Lingual
-
Lingual brackets are metal and glued to the back of the teeth, so you can't see them at all.
Invisible
-
Invisible braces are clear, removable appliances that the patient can put in his mouth and remove only while eating. The orthodontist gives the patient a new appliance every couple of weeks that is shaped slightly different to move the teeth.
