What Are Braces?

If you have dental problems, such as crooked teeth, an underbite or an overbite, you might consider getting dental braces to correct the alignment of your teeth.
  1. Function

    • Braces are used to straighten the teeth by applying constant, steady pressure to the teeth. Braces will move the teeth and correct their alignment in the mouth.

    Types

    • Commonly, metal braces with small rubber bands are used. Depending on your teeth, you may also be able to choose clear braces or braces that sit behind your teeth.

    Care

    • It is important to keep both your teeth and braces clean after eating. Make sure that you remove any food that is stuck in your braces, and avoid foods that may cause problems.

    Pain

    • Because of the pressure that braces put on your teeth, it may feel uncomfortable at times. A simple pain reliever should help.

    Time Frame

    • Typically, braces are worn for two years. However, your orthodontist will tell you exactly how long your teeth with need to be braced before they are aligned.

    After Care

    • Once your braces are removed, you will likely need to wear a retainer to keep the teeth from moving back. A retainer is simply a small, hard piece of plastic with wires on it.
