What exactly are braces headgear used for?

Headgear is used to correct various orthodontic problems, such as:

1. Overbite: When the upper teeth protrude significantly over the lower teeth.

2. Underbite: When the lower teeth protrude excessively beyond the upper teeth.

3. Crossbite: When some of the upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth.

4. Midline deviation: When the upper and lower middle teeth are not aligned.

5. Spacing issues: When there are large gaps or spaces between the teeth.

6. Severe crowding: When the teeth are too crowded and don't have enough room to erupt properly.

7. Asymmetrical growth patterns: Where one side of the jaw grows more than the other.

Headgear works by applying extra force to the teeth and jaws to encourage them to move in the desired direction. It is typically worn for several hours each day, sometimes only at night, depending on the individual case. While headgear can be effective in treating various orthodontic problems, it can be uncomfortable and may affect one's appearance, which can cause self-consciousness. As such, it's important to discuss the treatment plan and expectations with an orthodontist before undergoing treatment involving headgear.
