What is a cleft pallet?

A cleft palate is a birth defect that occurs when the roof of the mouth (palate) does not fuse together properly during fetal development. This can result in a hole in the roof of the mouth, which can lead to problems with feeding, speech, and hearing.

Cleft palate can be either unilateral (occurring on one side of the palate) or bilateral (occurring on both sides of the palate). It can also be associated with other birth defects, such as cleft lip, which is a birth defect that occurs when the lip does not fuse together properly.

The exact cause of cleft palate is unknown, but it is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Some risk factors for cleft palate include:

* Family history of cleft palate

* Certain genetic syndromes, such as Down syndrome

* Maternal exposure to certain toxins, such as alcohol, tobacco, and certain medications

* Maternal nutritional deficiencies, such as folic acid deficiency

Cleft palate can be diagnosed during pregnancy with an ultrasound examination. Treatment for cleft palate typically involves surgery to repair the hole in the roof of the mouth. This surgery is usually performed within the first few months of life. Additional treatments may be necessary to address problems with feeding, speech, and hearing.

With proper treatment, most children with cleft palate are able to live healthy, normal lives.
