Types of Braces for Children
-
Metal Braces
-
Metal braces are the most common type of braces recommended for children. They are the most economical and are highly effective at repositioning teeth. They go on the outside of teeth and rubber bands are used between the braces to help tighten each brace.
Lingual Braces
-
Lingual braces refer to a kind of brace that goes on the tongue side of the mouth, or the lingual side. These braces are meant to not show when the child smiles. Each brace in a set of lingual braces is custom designed for the particular tooth it is going to fit, so no two braces are alike. Teenagers and those who are self-conscious about getting braces may go this route.
Clear Braces
-
Clear braces are a more economical choice than lingual braces, but they are still able to be disguised. Clear braces are also known as ceramic brackets, and are made from composite materials. The color of these braces is made to match the color of the teeth, so that they remain discrete.
Teen Invisalign
-
Teen Invisalign has the same basic features as Invisalign for adults, but are designed to keep up with the active lifestyle of teenagers. Invisalign is designed for those children and teenagers who only need minor dental corrections. The braces are removable, and slowly straighten out the teeth. The braces are made from plastic and custom fit to each person's mouth. When eating, drinking or sleeping, the invisalign is not supposed to be worn. Teen Invisalign comes with extra replacement aligners in case one gets misplaced.
