Types of Braces for Kids

Braces are "a fixed orthodontic appliance, usually comprised of brackets, bands and wires," according to the information site Braces. Braces are referred to as metal, ceramic or lingual. Aligners can be used for simple tooth realignment. These are not considered braces because they are removable and do not consist of brackets, bands or wires, but aligners can accomplish the same realignment goal.
  1. Metal Braces

    • Metal braces are cemented to a patient's teeth. Then, according to Newswise, "a metal wire is laced through each bracket to exert force on the teeth to correct their placement." The goal of metal braces is to adjust teeth slightly every few weeks. A patient can choose colored bands to be worn around the brackets. The patient can choose new bands at every appointment.

    Ceramic Braces

    • Ceramic braces are made of either ceramic or plastic material. These brackets are laced with metal or clear wire. The goal of these braces is the same as metal braces with the additional goal of being less visible. Ceramic braces are generally used for patients around twelve years old.

    Lingual Braces

    • Lingual braces are more expensive than the other two options. These braces are cemented to the backs of a patient's teeth. The goal is for the braces to be completely invisible when a patient smiles or talks. A patient must be custom fit for lingual braces, and a dentist must have special training to install them.

    Aligners

    • Aligners are clear plastic trays that are removable, like mouth guards. They are used for minor realignment concerns. Patients are custom fit to an aligner tray. Several trays are made with slight adjustment and are changed "every two weeks. They wear the trays all day and night, removing them to eat and brush their teeth."
