Types of Fixed Braces

Fixed braces stay attached to the teeth for the duration of the treatment. In the past, fixed braces were metal but now other materials are available. Fixed braces use a series of brackets and rings that are fitted to the teeth and connected by a wire. The design of this type of brace allows for adjustments that have to be made throughout the treatment. Fixed braces must be adjusted to draw the teeth into the desired position.
  1. Metal

    • Metal is still the most common material used for making fixed braces because they are the least expensive. Another advantage of metal braces is that they have no limitations when it comes to the conditions they can be used to treat. When using fixed braces of any type, the treatment can last from six months to two years depending upon the problem being addressed.

    Stainless Steel

    • Stainless steel is also used to manufacture fixed braces. Braces made of stainless steel cover less of the tooth, making them less noticeable. Stainless steel braces are practical, reliable and work quickly. Fixed braces made of stainless steel are a little more expensive than braces made of other metals.

    Colored

    • Colored fixed braces are just standard metal braces that used colored wire. The color of the wire can be changed at each visit to the dentist. The colored wire does not change the length of the treatment or make the braces work any better. It it just makes wearing braces a little more fun than it was in the past.

    Lingual

    • Lingual braces are put on the inside of the teeth instead of the outside, which makes them less noticeable. There are some drawbacks to lingual braces. The first is that they cannot be used to correct all problems. Lingual braces can only be used to make minor adjustments to the teeth. Another problem is that initially the tongue can be irritated and sore from rubbing against the braces. Speech can also be affected for several days until the patient becomes used to wearing the braces.

    Ceramic

    • Ceramic braces are becoming more popular because they are clear and much less noticeable than other types of braces. This type of braces appeals to people who are conscious of their appearance. The drawbacks of ceramic braces are that they are more fragile. This means the patient must care for braces better. The elastic ties tend to discolor between visits to the dentist and they are more expensive than metal braces.
