Brace Cleaning Tools

Braces are commonly used to straighten teeth for reasons befitting health and/or cosmetic appearances. When the time comes to remove braces, teeth that have not been cared for using specially designed braces cleaning tools, can be stained and damaged. This problem can be avoided with proper care for teeth as directed by a dentist. There are various tools that are frequently suggested for use on teeth with braces.
  1. Oral Irrigators

    • Oral irrigators can be used by those with or without braces to aid in the prevention of diseases of the mouth. The devices work by flushing out plaque and bits of food that brushing and floss frequently miss. Brushing and flossing can be even more inadequate in the removal of food from braces. Irrigators usually have tips that can be removed and replaced, so the machines can be shared be multiple people using separate tips. Some are made in syringe form, while others are made to attach directly to a bathroom sink faucet or even a shower head. Many people find these to be a convenient and inexpensive alternative to traditional irrigators.

    Floss Threaders

    • Threaders are floss designed for use with bridges, implants, braces, or any dental appliance that may render traditional floss inefficient or impractical. Floss threaders enable the user to navigate around the tooth appliance and clean around the dental gear itself. Threaders work in a way similar to sewing needles, and some floss threaders are giant plastic "needles." Some products even combine the floss with the threader. Many users find this to be convenient, though others prefer to buy threaders separately so they can use whatever floss they wish.

    Specialty Toothbrushes

    • Specialty toothbrushes can make brushing teeth with braces more efficient. Because brushing is the most common way to clean teeth in a general sense, having a brush designed for use with braces is sensible. Soft V-shaped bristles (long outer, short inner) enable the bristles to maneuver over the protruding braces and make contact with the wearer's teeth. Spiral interproximal brushes are also commonly used on teeth with braces. These thin, tree-shaped tools can be used behind the wires of braces and other hard-to-reach spots.
