How to Get Affordable Braces

Dental braces serve to align your teeth and jaw, helping to prevent dental problems later on, while also giving teeth a straight, natural appearance. While both adults and children need braces, they can be very expensive for many families. There are, however, some ways you can get affordable braces, depending on your situation.
  1. Smiles Change Lives

    • Started in 1997 in Kansas City, Missouri, Smiles Change Lives (smileschangelives.org) has helped more than 1,500 children get low-cost braces. The non-profit organization helps children from low-income families get orthodontic care and braces at low cost through qualified providers in their area. To benefit from the Smiles Change Lives Program, an online application must be filled out which is found on the organization's website. You can also find information there about qualifying for the program and detailed instructions for filling out the application. At the time of publication, there was a $30 application fee.

    Medicaid

    • Many people know Medicaid (medicaid.gov) as a federally-funded, state-administered program for older adults, but there are programs in place for children as well. In fact, Medicaid programs for children are often very comprehensive. Children covered by Medicaid programs like the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) can receive dental services designed to relieve pain and infection, restore tooth health and maintain optimal tooth health. In many cases, braces may be covered, especially in the case of moderately to severely crooked teeth or irregular jaw or tooth alignment. Visit the Medicaid CHIP page for more information about applying.

    Local Dental Schools

    • Dental schools in your area often offer residents orthodontic services as a way to train dentists looking to specialize in orthodontic care. Orthodontic procedures at dental schools are performed by licensed dentists looking to specialize in orthodontics. Because they are supervised by experienced orthodontists, you or your child will not be receiving sub-standard care. The cost of braces through dental schools can vary, but will be less than going through a practicing orthodontist.

Talk to Your Dentist or Orthodontist

    • Your dentist or orthodontist may be willing to work with you to arrange payments for braces that you can afford, especially if you and your family are established patients of the dentist or orthodontist. Explain your situation and ask about possible special payment arrangements. For many people, simply having more time to pay for braces can help tremendously.
