What Are the Different Methods for Closing Spaces in Human Teeth?
Most people have some degree of space in between their teeth. However, for some, the gaps are quite noticeable and aesthetically bothersome. This condition, known as diastema, is common and is easily corrected by a variety of dental procedures.-
Causes
-
The treatment for diastema will depend on the cause. For some, it is due to undersized teeth. In others, the frenum (portion of gum above and between the two front teeth) is too large, impeding the natural closing of space between the front teeth. Some people are simply born with missing teeth.
Orthodontics
-
People who wish to correct diastema should first consult with an orthodontist. The orthodontist will likely place braces on all of the patient's teeth, but sometimes, a gap can be closed with partial braces or a retainer. Orthodontic treatment will gradually move the teeth closer together over time, closing any noticeable spaces.
Bonding
-
If the teeth are otherwise straight, dentists can close a gap between a patient's teeth through dental bonding. This process involves placing a composite material on the teeth adjacent to a gap to widen the teeth slightly, thus narrowing the space between them.
Crowns and Veneers
-
For more extensive gaps, dentists will recommend veneers, a form of dental bonding which covers the entire face of the teeth with the composite material. They may also recommend a crown (a porcelain cap that lies on top of a tooth) if a significantly small tooth is causing the gap.
Missing Teeth
-
Gaps caused by missing teeth must be corrected by dental implants, bridges or partial dentures.
