Pain Remedy for Braces
-
Pain Relievers
-
Try an over-the-counter pain reliever to help ease the pains of a recent braces adjustment. Try one that contains ibuprofen, which can help with swollen gums, or try one that your orthodontist recommends to you. Take as directed and immediately after your adjustment to treat and prevent further pain.
Compresses
-
Try a hot or cold compress, or alternating between the two. You can apply a warm washcloth, or ice wrapped in a washcloth, depending on your preference. The temperatures can help alleviate pain and also reduce any possible swelling in your jaw and gums. If you choose to alternate, apply one for 10 minutes, remove and apply the other for another 10 minutes.
Numb the Pain
-
Apply an oral numbing gel or spray to gums or painful areas. These anesthetic medications can be purchased over-the-counter and temporarily numb the area of pain. Try using these after eating, immediately after a trip to the orthodontist or right before bed to help you get to sleep.
Try Some Wax
-
Make sure to use the wax your orthodontist offers you. Wax is great for preventing sores and cuts from braces, and for blocking any areas that may be irritated, keeping them from getting further irritated. Just use a small amount and wrap it around the area of braces that is irritating your mouth. This should allow the area to begin healing, and keep irritation from worsening.
Warm Foods
-
Eat warm, soft foods and avoid any foods that are hard to chew, which will further pain. Warm, soft foods will help lessen pain much like a hot compress will, by warming teeth and gums. It is also gentle on teeth, so it prevents worsening aches and pains. Try foods like mashed potatoes, chicken or beef broth, mashed up peas or creamed corn.
