What determines when girls who are 9 to 12 years old should begin wearing a bra?
The right time to start wearing a bra does not only depend on the girl’s age. Instead, it's more dependent on the girl’s developmental stage.
- Tanner Stage 1: This is the initial stage of puberty, at which point the areola may begin to elevate slightly and the breast starts to develop. For this stage, wearing a training or 'sports bra' that will provide light breast support is the best choice.
- Tanner Stage 2: At this stage, there’s a rapid growth in the breast tissue and the areola gets larger and darker. This stage usually requires wearing bras that provide more coverage and support.
- Tanner Stage 3: This is usually the time that girls begin their menstruation, and this is also the stage at which their breast may be fully grown. At this stage, proper-sized supportive bras are the most important.

- Their breasts may be becoming visible through their clothes, especially when they are not wearing a shirt or have on very tight clothing.
- They feel self-conscious about their breasts.
- They feel embarrassed when talking about any issues related to breasts or bras.
- They start shopping for bras without telling you.
