What are springs for braces?

Springs for braces are small metal devices that are used to apply force to certain teeth in order to move them into the desired positions. They are typically used in conjunction with other orthodontic appliances, such as brackets, wires, and bands, to correct a variety of dental problems, such as crowding, spacing, and misalignment.

Springs are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, and are selected by the orthodontist based on the individual patient's needs. The springs are attached to the braces using hooks, and are activated by the orthodontist during periodic adjustment visits.

Once activated, the springs will gently push or pull the teeth in the desired direction until the desired correction has been achieved. Springs can also be used to hold teeth in place, such as when a gap is being closed.

As the teeth start moving, the orthodontic spring also moves, ensuring that the teeth move in the right direction and at a regular pace. When enough force is applied, the teeth will start to shift position gradually until the desired alignment is achieved.

Springs can be uncomfortable initially, but patients typically adjust to them within a few days. It is important to follow the orthodontist's instructions carefully when wearing springs, and to avoid chewing on hard objects, such as ice cubes, popcorn kernels, or candy, as this can damage the springs.
