Alternative to Braces for Teenagers

The teenage years can be a very emotional time. Teens are struggling to find their place in the world as they start to explore dating, friendships and even discovering who they are or want to be. It is important for the teen to fit in, wear the right clothes, and have the "look" of the moment. Having to wear braces can be very emotional for a teen, so finding an alternative to braces can often help their self-esteem.
  1. Why Wear Braces

    • Braces are required on teeth that are crooked, crowded or misaligned. People with an overbite or underbite, incorrect jaw position or jaw joint disorders also may require braces. If these conditions are left untreated, it affects more than a person's appearance. These conditions can lead to gum disease, headaches, earaches, tooth decay, as well as problems with biting and chewing. An orthodontist can diagnose the condition and recommend a plan of treatment to correct the problem.

    Braces for Teenagers

    • The traditional metal braces can seem unattractive to a teen, as well as uncomfortable to wear. Certain foods have to be restricted with metal braces and the braces require regular visits to the orthodontist for tightening. There are alternatives to metal braces that should be discussed with the orthodontist. While these alternatives are great for some dental problems, there are still some diagnoses that require the metal braces in order to correct the problem.

    Invisalign Teen

    • Invisalign braces are clear retainers, or aligners, that straighten the teeth. They can be removed for teeth maintenance or oral hygiene. The aligners are changed every few weeks and will gradually straighten the teeth without metal braces. The aligners are removed for eating and drinking, so no foods have to be restricted. Invisalign are alternatives for crooked teeth, but are not good for the teen with severe dental problems. Invisalign aligners can be more expensive than metal braces.

    Lingual Braces

    • Lingual braces attach to the back of the teeth so they cannot be seen from the front. They are not for every condition, such as certain types of bites. Lingual braces can be expensive, the brackets may cause pain if they cut the tongue and speech can be affected.

    Porcelain Veneers

    • Porcelain veneers can also replace traditional metal braces. The veneers stick to the teeth to fill in gaps and correct cavity problems. Bonding can also be used with the veneers. They are expensive, but eliminate the need to constantly visit the dentist.
