Typical Cost of Orthodontic Braces

Many people wear braces at least once in their lifetime. Many types of braces are available the price for each varies. Your dentist may choose which is best for you based on the extent and severity of your treatment.
  1. Types

    • Many types of braces are out there, from the traditional metal brackets to the removable braces called aligners. Metal brackets are often the most effective and are the most economical. Another bracket choice is ceramic, which is often tooth-colored and less noticeable but also slightly more expensive. Removable braces or aligners are another popular choice, especially among older teens and adults, but are the most expensive option.

    Average Cost

    • As of November 2010, the cost of traditional metal brackets is around $1,800 to $5,000 for a full set. Ceramic brackets are about $500 to $1,000 more than metal brackets and do not discolor over time. Removable braces are the most expensive, ranging from $3,000 to $9,000. In some instances, dental insurance can help cover part of the cost.

    Time Frame

    • The average time you wear braces is generally one to two years, but every person is different and the severity of your spacing issues may make this time span considerably longer. Generally, if issues are identified in childhood, the amount of time to wear braces is shorter compared to getting braces as an adult. The longer you wear braces and need orthodontic care, the more it will cost.
