How to Use Fluoride Therapy to Prevent Cavities

Fluoride prevents tooth decay by making your teeth more resistant to the acid that causes cavities. It strengthens tooth enamel and keeps bacteria from growing. That bacteria could become plaque. There are many fluoride treatments available. Some are through your dentist, others you can do at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Boost a child's fluoride with water. Fluoride is very effective when taken internally while a child's teeth are developing. Up until the age of 11, there should be enough fluoride in your water to reduce tooth decay.

    • 2

Ask the dentist or doctor for sodium fluoride drops or tablets if your water doesn't contain enough fluoride. They have to be prescribed.

    • 3

Go to the dentist for a fluoride treatment. He can apply it directly to your teeth if you're susceptible to tooth decay. He will dry your teeth, then fill a mouth tray with the gel. You'll have to sit there for four minutes then spit it out.

    • 4

Use toothpaste and mouth rinse containing fluoride. They will help prevent cavities and strengthen your teeth.

    • 5

Brush with a fluoride toothpaste if you're prone to cavities. This is different than your normal toothpaste. After brushing your teeth, you'll brush for at least 30 seconds with the fluoride gel. Spit it out and don't rise.

    • 6

Get a fluoride varnish on your teeth. It's painted onto your teeth and dries within seconds. You can't rinse, drink or eat for 30 minutes after the treatment.

    • 7

Take a fluoride supplement to prevent cavities. There are lozenges, tablets and liquids available. The supplement is usually recommended for children who don't have fluoride in their water.
