What can cause the cervix to dilate?
There are a number of things that can cause the cervix to dilate, including:
* Pregnancy: As the baby grows and develops, the cervix will begin to dilate in order to allow the baby to pass through during childbirth.
* Labor: During labor, the cervix will continue to dilate until it is fully open (10 centimeters) in order to allow the baby to be born.
* Medical interventions: Certain medical interventions, such as amniotomy (rupture of the amniotic sac) and induction of labor, can also cause the cervix to dilate.
* Trauma:Trauma to the cervix, such as from a car accident or a surgical procedure, can also cause the cervix to dilate.
* Certain medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as cervical cancer, can also cause the cervix to dilate.
If you are experiencing cervical dilation and you are not pregnant, it is important to see a doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
