What does the dorsal cavity contain?

The dorsal cavity (also known as the posterior cavity) is the part of the body cavity that lies behind the ventral cavity. In humans and other vertebrates, the dorsal cavity is subdivided into the cranial cavity and the vertebral canal.

- The cranial cavity contains the brain and its protective coverings, the meninges. The cranial cavity is formed by the bones of the skull. It is continuous with the vertebral canal through the foramen magnum, a large opening at the base of the skull.

- The vertebral canal contains the spinal cord and its protective coverings, the meninges. The vertebral canal is formed by the vertebrae, the small bones that make up the spine. It extends from the foramen magnum to the coccyx, the small bone at the base of the spine.

The dorsal cavity is responsible for protecting the delicate structures of the brain and spinal cord. It also provides space for these structures to grow and develop.
