How to Use the GE TMJ Device

A temporomandibular joint device or coil known as the MEDRAD Burnett Bi-directional TMJ device is manufactured by General Electric Healthcare. It is used to clinically position the jaw during magnetic resonance imaging. The device is essentially a diagnostic imaging accessory and it is capable of opening a jaw from one to 55 millimeters wide. Imaging of the jaw is normally ordered after a patient complains of pain while chewing or a decreased ability to open the mouth for enunciation and practicing dental hygiene.

  Slide two opposing disposable mouthpieces on one end of the device furthest away from the handle. When used properly, the upper mouthpiece visible from the right side of the device will be facing up, and the lower mouthpiece visible from the left side of the device will be facing down.

  Place the mouthpieces inside of the patient's mouth before beginning the MRI procedure.

  Adjust the device to open the jaw wide enough to conduct the procedure successfully. Keep in mind the duration of the MRI and try to adjust the device for the patient's comfort level. Slide the lever up and down to widen or close the space between the mouthpieces. Every time the lever moves the mouthpieces an additional millimeter apart, you will hear a click. View the scale on the side of the device to see the setting from one to 55 millimeters. The device cannot open the jaw wider than 55 millimeters.

  Push the quick release slide to close up the device when the MRI is completed. Carefully remove it from the patient's mouth.
