How to Fix Your Teeth at Dental Schools

Dental health is an important element in overall body health. Occasionally, dental problems such as cavities, gum disease, tooth impaction and infection require treatment. A family dental practice can offer a variety of treatment services, but the costs are sometimes out of reach for people with little or no insurance coverage. An inexpensive alternative to seeking professional treatment is to visit a patient clinic at a dental school, where your examination and treatment will be performed by a dental school student and supervised by a licensed dentist.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the American Dental Association Dental Education Program Search page to locate dental schools in your area. Most schools in this directory provide information about patient clinic services on their websites.

    • 2

Click on the web link to visit the school's website, and browse the site to find information about patient clinic services, if the school offers them. Many clinics will offer services on a sliding scale for patients with limited financial resources. Compare clinics to find one that most suits you.

    • 3

Call the clinic to ask whether they accept new patients. Describe what kind of symptoms your are experiencing, and what kind of treatment you are seeking. The clinic staff will schedule an appointment for you, and explain what kinds of paperwork are required for your visit. Usually an initial examination is required prior to scheduling treatments, so plan for at least two visits.

    • 4

Arrange to have a friend or family member accompany you to your appointment. If you are given pain killers or anesthesia during your treatment, you will need transportation assistance.

    • 5

Follow any advice and recommendations given by the dental student and supervisor after your treatment. If you are prescribed medication, take it as directed.

    • 6

Follow up with the clinic after your treatment is complete if you have any questions, or are if you need further treatment.
