Clinical Description of a Chain Ligation

Chain ligation is a dental procedure for an impacted tooth, which is a tooth that is blocked from growing normally. The treatment consists of attaching a chain to guide the tooth to its proper position.
  1. Facts

    • An impacted tooth that is causing symptoms such as pain, inflammation, misalignment and infection requires treatment. Chain ligation may be an option if the tooth is not easily removable. Surgery of the gum area may become necessary to expose the top of the impacted tooth.

    Procedure

    • A special bracket with a chain is bonded to the exposed tooth and a hole is made in the gum flap. The oral surgeon then threads the chain through the hole, attaches it to the permanent teeth and replaces the gum flap. The tension from the chain guides the subsequent growth of the tooth.

    Other Information

    • According to the consumer information website Periodontist.org, the emergence of the tooth into its correct position may require several months. Painkillers and antibiotics may be recommended, as necessary. Although chain ligation is a treatment with a good prognosis, complications may result. These include temporary numbness, infection and jaw fracture or pain.
