How to Get a Perfect Denture Fit

Dentures fit by your dentist should fit perfectly to your mouth. Ill-fitting dentures can slip or fall out. According to the Mayo Clinic, they can also cause irritation, ulcers and recurrent sores. Having dentures that fit can improve your health and confidence and allow you to chew and speak with more ease. If you have gotten ill-fitting dentures or if your dentures have become loose because of wear, you should refit them.

Instructions

    • 1

Speak to your dentist about which dentures are right for you. Decide whether you need immediate dentures or standard dentures. Immediate dentures, also called temporary dentures, are a great temporary solution while you wait for your permanent dentures, which can take weeks. These dentures however, are not a perfect fit because they are made for your mouth prior to your tooth extractions.

    • 2

Visit your dentist after your extraction to have impressions taken of your teeth and gums. Your dentist will insert a tray containing soft material into your mouth. When the tray is removed, it will have an impression of your mouth and will be used to make a wax mould for your dentures.

    • 3

See your dentist once your wax mould is ready. You will bite on the wax to take more impressions of your teeth. This will be used to make a wax version of your dentures. The dentist will also look at the shade of your teeth to determine the color of your dentures.

Try the wax dentures. If they are a perfect fit, our dentist will order the real dentures based on the wax mould.

    • 5

Insert your new dentures into your mouth at your dentist's office. You may need minor adjustments if they rub on your gums.

    • 6

See your dentist if your dentures stop fitting snugly.
