What Is an Endodontic Dentist?
An endodontic dentist, or endodontist, specializes in root canals, which are referred to as endodontics. In addition, they often take care of teeth damaged as a result of injury or trauma to the mouth. Already fully trained dentists, endodontists receive an additional two years of specialist training in endodontic procedures designed to preserve -- rather than pull -- teeth after a disease or accident.-
Root Canal
-
Root canals are performed when the living tissue inside the tooth, called the pulp, has been either damaged or exposed in some way. The tooth will be opened and one or more roots in the tooth extracted, depending on if it is a small single-rooted tooth or large multi-root molar. All the living tooth tissue will be removed and the tooth filled and then closed.
Root Canal Retreatment
-
If a root canal has not been done correctly or the damage to the rest of the tooth progresses, the endodontist will perform a second root canal.
Endodontic Surgery
-
If the roots cannot be accessed through the inside of the tooth, the endodontist will perform surgery by opening up the gum to access the root there.
Tooth Injury Treatment
-
Tooth trauma can require treatment or replacement. Endodontists can replant teeth that have been knocked out and give bone grafts to help keep teeth in place.
