Procedure for New Denture Fitting
The fitting procedure for new dentures involves a consultation, examination and making a mold or impression, according to Medic8.com. Sometimes tooth extraction and a healing period are required before any dentures can be fitted.-
Consultation
-
During the initial consultation, the dentist performs an examination to determine whether the patient can be fitted with a denture. The patient's history is discussed. Questions and concerns are addressed at this time.
Molding and Bite Registration
-
The dentist then takes an impression of teeth and gums. A tray containing dental putty is inserted in the mouth and removed after it sets. This is followed by wax registration, during which wax rims are inserted to take an impression of the bite. This helps position the artificial teeth correctly. Shade of the teeth is also recorded for matching the dentures.
Try-In and Insertion
-
Before the actual denture is finished, a wax denture with the denture teeth is inserted in the patient's mouth to check fit, according to the Carnegie Dental Group. After the actual denture is made, adjustments may still be required to make them more comfortable. Repeated appointments may be required.
