How to Eat Meals After Teeth Extraction

When teeth become decayed beyond treatment or grow in such a way that they prevent other teeth from coming, a procedure called extraction is performed. While it is a simple surgery in which the offending tooth is removed, the aftereffects and healing process can be painful and difficult. One difficulty you will face is finding a way to eat meals properly, but as long as you keep a few things in mind, you will be able to eat and be full until your mouth feels better.

Instructions

    • 1

Drink 64 oz. of fluid on the same day as the extraction and during the following days until you start eating normally. Sip the drink to avoid upsetting the extraction site and causing bleeding.

    • 2

Drink fluids that are not carbonated or too extreme in temperature. High protein drinks like vegetable juice at room temperature are a good choice.

    • 3

Eat soft foods that require little or no chewing, such as mashed potatoes, cooked cereals, soup, and pureed fruits and vegetables. Keep the spoon or fork out of your mouth as much as possible.

    • 4

Avoid any foods that break or splinter as they can easily get lodged in the extraction site. This includes pretzels, chips, popcorn or seeds.

    • 5

Keep objects, like your fingers, toothbrushes or toothpicks, away from the sore area. These could easily make the site bleed and cause pain.

    • 6

Chew on the opposite side of your mouth from the extraction site when you have foods that require it. You should do this until the feeling returns completely to that part of your mouth.

    • 7

Introduce harder foods slowly as your mouth starts to feel better, but avoid sticky foods like caramel or toffee that will adhere to the healing extraction.
