Schools That Offer IV Sedation Training for Dentists

Intravenous (IV) sedation is used in dentistry in order to ensure that certain people have a visit to the dentist that is relaxing and anxiety-free. This helps people who fear going to the dentist too much to get the dental care they need because they are suffering from an acute apprehension, called dental phobia. There are more and more dental schools all across the United States that are offering training in IV sedation to dentists.
  1. Medical College of Georgia

    • The Medical College of Georgia, in Augusta, Georgia, offers a one-year course called the “Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program.” This course is available at the postdoctoral level and provides clinical and scientific teaching experience in every area of dentistry. It also emphasizes the planning and treatment of medically complex patients. The students receive training in advanced procedures, such as IV sedation, rotary endodontics (dentistry branch that deals with diseases of the dental pulp) and implants.

An advanced program is given to residents in the areas of scientific teaching and clinical training in fixed, implanted and removable prosthodontics (dentistry branch dealing with the replacement of teeth or parts of the jaw with prosthetic devices) with the aid of highly trained and supportive laboratory technicians. The residents also receive instruction about managing phobic, medically compromised and geriatric patients, and they receive additional scientific teaching and clinical experience in the application of IV sedation techniques.

Being both hospital- and community-based, this program offers clinical training and scientific teaching in growth and development, behavior management, oral pathology, trauma, sedation and general anesthesia procedures, pulp therapy and restorative dentistry. Students are offered rotations in pediatric medicine, WIC (women, infants and children) programs and anesthesiology, and when the second year comes, the students get to choose an elective. The pediatric dental residents of this program will receive comprehensive training in operating room and general anesthesia procedures. This extensive training will also be given in the areas of office-based oral and deep IV sedation techniques.

    Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation

    • If you want to learn more about IV sedation but don't think you are quite ready to commit to taking a complete certification course, then you might want to think about taking a two-day hands-on course called Into to IV Sedation that is offered by the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation in Seattle, Washington. It is specifically designed for those dentists who do not yet have IV certification but have an interest in exploring the prospects to provide both minimal and moderate IV sedation in their offices.

These are some of the topics that will be included with this course: up-to-date and clinically relevant minimal and moderate techniques in sedation, commonly used IV medications, reviewing the science behind IV sedation, new IV drugs on today's market and new IV sedation treatments.

Some of the course highlights include airway management and gaining practice with high-fidelity patient simulators; with the use of mannequin arms, having a hands-on review of how to start an IV line; and the kind of drills you might use in case of a sedation emergency that will be practiced on high-fidelity patient simulators.
