TMJ Surgery Recovery
TMJ (temporomandibular) joint disorders cause soreness and pain on either side of your head in front of your ears. In some cases, surgery is required to relieve discomfort. Complete recovery from TMJ surgery can take several months.-
Hospitalization
-
TMJ surgery requires a hospital stay that typically ranges from seven to 10 days.
Swelling
-
Ice packs may help reduce the swelling in front of the ears and side of the face that is common while the facial tissue heals.
Incision Care
-
The two surgical incisions must be cleaned daily starting the day after surgery with an equal mixture of water and peroxide and Neosporin ointment. Sutures are generally removed one week following the operation.
Dietary Restrictions
-
A liquid diet is standard fare during the first couple of weeks following TMJ surgery. Soft foods (like scrambled eggs) can be introduced after four weeks.
Exercise
-
TMJ surgery patients are given instructions on how to operate an oral therapy device to help gently guide the mouth open as far as possible. This equipment is to be used five times a day for up to six months.
