Dentist Medication for Anxiety
Studies show that up to 55% of dental patients experience anxiety about going to the dentist. Even these numbers fail to reflect the people who avoid the dentist altogether. Because of this, dentists are working to make patients as comfortable and relaxed as possible during dental procedures.-
Novocain
-
Although the traditional Novocain is generally useful for numbing, some dentists have found it to be less effective on patients who are anxious about being at the dentist. Of course, patients become more nervous when the Novocain doesn't work. This creates a cycle of more Novocain and more anxiety, making it very difficult to treat the patient.
Laughing Gas
-
When this happens, it is often helpful to supplement the Novocain with nitrous oxide, commonly known as "laughing gas." Usually, the combination is very effective.
Oral Sedation
-
Sedation dentistry is available for clients with severe anxiety about dental treatment. Sedation dentists will often begin with an antianxiety medication like Valium or Halcion, both members of the benzodiazepine family.
General Anesthesia
-
Although somewhat of a last resort, some dental centers will administer general anesthesia to allow the patient to sleep through dental treatment.
Psychotherapy
-
Finally, people who prefer to address their fears from a psychological standpoint may find it helpful to see a counselor or undergo cognitive behavioral therapy.
