Implants Vs. Tooth Crowns

When you have an ugly or missing tooth, there are different treatment options to consider with your dentist. One option is a crown to cover a bad tooth. Another option is an implant to completely replace it.
  1. Function of a Crown

    • A crown is formed to cover a tooth that is misshapen or discolored. It is made to match the size and shape of adjacent teeth.

    Function of an Implant

    • A dental implant completely replaces a missing tooth. The implant fuses to the jaw bone for stability.

    Method of Placing a Crown

    • A crown is cemented onto an existing tooth. The dentist files down the tooth that is already there to properly fit the crown over it. A root canal may be necessary if the tooth being covered is extremely decayed and at risk of infection.

    Types

    • A dental implant is made of titanium for strength and durability. A crown can be made of porcelain, gold and metal alloys, acrylic and ceramic. Metal crowns are more durable than porcelain, but they can't be made the same color as surrounding teeth.

    Time Frame

    • After the tooth is made, a crown can be installed in one office visit. The process for a dental implant is done in three steps and takes several months.
