Procedure for Porcelain Teeth
For some, their smile is the most important feature on their face, and when the teeth are discolored, crooked or chipped they may become self-conscious. Porcelain veneers are placed over the teeth to improve the smile and appearance. The porcelain is durable, and it is not prone to stain over time. Veneers may also help close gaps between teeth and repair those that are damaged.-
Consultation
-
During the consolation, it is important that you share with your dentist the outcome you would like in changing your appearance. He will go over options for improving your smile, including talking about what to expect during the procedure, as well as risks, cost and any necessary anesthesia.
Your dentist will take photos of the teeth and gums as well as examine your mouth to see what can be done for the teeth during the procedure. Be sure to ask questions about his experience with porcelain teeth, as well as how you may care for them after the procedure. Ask to see before and after pictures of other patients to see how well the dentist has done in the past before signing any papers.
Procedure
-
After the consultation, the next appointment will involve shaping the teeth and removing enamel to allow for better bonding between the teeth and the veneers. Once the teeth are prepared, the dentist will make impressions of the teeth to mold permanent porcelain teeth. The dentist may then apply a temporary set of porcelain teeth for aesthetic reasons and to protect your newly exposed teeth.
The following appointment will be a test run for your permanent porcelain teeth. The dentist will put them on your teeth and make any necessary adjustments to get them perfect before permanently bonding them to your teeth.
Finally, at the last appointment, the teeth will be cleaned thoroughly and then the porcelain veneers will be bonded to the teeth using composite resin cement.
There is little to no pain involved in the procedure, but a local anesthetic is usually given.
After the procedure
-
Once your porcelain teeth have been permanently bonded, you should be free to carry on daily activities. Cold drinks may cause a slight sensitivity at first, so use a straw for the first few days after the procedure. Brush as normal, and be sure to floss to maintain proper dental health. While porcelain is durable, don't do anything you wouldn't with your original teeth such as chewing or biting down on hard objects like pens, metal or even hard candies.
