What Is a Denture Reline or Rebase?
Over time dentures can begin to feel loose. The denture can be adjusted for better fit by a dentist. The American Dental Association recommends that dentures be relined or rebased at least every five years.-
Significance
-
When dentures are slipping or not fitting well, a denture reline or rebase usually fixes the problem. As time passes, the gums shrink or bone loss occurs, resulting in the need for a denture adjustment.
Reline
-
A denture reline consists of modifying the surface of the denture fitting closest to the gum. This procedure is done in the dentist's office, and does not affect the appearance of the denture, just the fit.
Rebase
-
Denture rebase is less common, and will require you to be without your dentures anywhere from one to three days. The dentist will make an entirely new base for the denture.
Effects
-
An ill-fitting denture can be very painful. Ulcers or tender spots may form on the gum, making it difficult to eat. However, regular relining or rebasing can help dentures last longer and function efficiently.
Considerations
-
The American Dental Association recommends replacing badly worn dentures, as they can cause health problems, including infections from mouth sores.
