Purchase a do-it-yourself whitening kit. Many desire a whiter smile but simply cannot afford the expensive laser techniques used by cosmetic dentists. There are a variety of whitening kits that can be purchased at the store for a fraction of the cost. There are strips, toothpastes, and polishes that are available at any national store chain. Most can show an improvement within a couple of weeks of use. You must adhere to the directions given on the whitening product so you get the most benefit. If not used correctly, results may be minimal to non-existent. Overuse can result in damage to the enamel on teeth.

Speak to an orthodontist if crooked teeth are the issue. Most people straighten their teeth with braces, but now there is a new Invisalign system. This system is designed mostly for adults who do not want unsightly silver braces on their teeth. An orthodontist will get a mold of your teeth and design the Invisalign cast for your specific needs. Every two weeks, you will wear a different cast and, over time, your teeth will be shifted into alignment.

Rinsing out the mouth can stop an awful lot of dental ailments. For example, cavities can be prevented simply by rinsing out the mouth with water immediately after eating. Acids that remain on teeth from food chew away at its enamel, causing cavities. After every meal, rinse with water or antiseptic mouthwash.

Contemplate porcelain veneers if you have missing, chipped, or cracked teeth. These are thin shells that cover teeth and look real. They are permanently bonded to your teeth and they feel as if they are a natural part of your teeth. Veneers will mask just about any imperfection you may have. The downside to veneers is that they are not cheap. They can cost anywhere from $800 to $1,100 per tooth. If you decide this procedure is right for you, make sure it is done by a cosmetic dentist with experience in fitting and cementing veneers on teeth. Not all dentists are trained to do this properly.

Prevention is the best way to avoid costly dental procedures in the future. Keeping a solid dental regimen is very important to the health of teeth. Be sure to brush at least twice a day and floss at least once. Use an antiseptic mouthwash before brushing to loosen remnants of food and drink consumed. Have your teeth cleaned by a dentist at least once, preferably twice, a year. Dentists can nip any potential problems in the bud before they turn into costly procedures.
