Tooth Implant Alternatives
While tooth implants may seem to be the most ideal option for regaining a natural set of teeth, it is not the only option and certainly not for everyone. Those who have had radiation therapy in the mouth or have diabetes are much less likely to have success with dental implants. Fortunately, there are many alternatives to implants such as dentures, partial dentures, and bridges that patients may choose from.-
Full Dentures
-
People who have lost most or all of their teeth may find full dentures to be a great restorative option. These are artificial teeth bonded to a support to fit directly over the gums. They are completely removable, so they can be taken out before bed or detached for cleaning. Most dentures are made of plastic; however, ceramic porcelain dentures are also available. Plastic is the traditional, least expensive method, while porcelain dentures generally cost a little more.
Partial Dentures
-
Those who have lost many, but not all, of their teeth may take the partial denture route. These have a plastic base where artificial teeth are bound. They contain metal clasps that are fastened to the natural teeth. The great thing about partial dentures is that a new tooth can be easily attached to the denture base if a natural tooth is lost.
Bridges
-
Bridges are made of strong porcelain and are molded to the individual's size, color, and shape of the natural teeth. They are artificial, bolstered by crowns that are affixed to natural teeth on each side of the gap. Dental bridges are always custom made for each patient. They keep natural teeth from fluctuating out of alignment which often happens when there is a gap between teeth.
